A#2: What is a text?
When we encounter a text, whether it is a narrative, an image, or even a piece of music, we understand the text by analyzing and interpreting its various features and combining these analyses to make the text meaningful (even if we are not conscious of doing this!). An understanding of how we analyze texts and from them create meaning is invaluable because it allows us to better scrutinize and comprehend the textual forces brought to bear upon us in our everyday lives (through advertisement, the media, politicians, and so forth.)
For this assignment you will select a text on which to practice analysis and interpretation. We will be using a broadly construed definition of text, so you may choose a written text, a visual text, or a sonic text. Your objective will be to analyze the features of the text in order to produce a reading or analysis of the text based on evidence from the text itself. In other words, what does this text mean and how do its features work to create this meaning?
Your composition should be three to four double spaced pages in size 12 Times New Roman font with one inch margins.
